Joël Suhubiette

From a cappella repertoire to oratorio, from Renaissance music to contemporary compositions, including opera, working with musicologists and meeting today's composers, Joël Suhubiette devotes most of his time to conducting his ensembles, the Toulouse chamber choir Les Éléments, which he founded in 1997, and the Jacques Moderne ensemble in Tours, of which he has been musical director since 1993.

For 25 years, he has been particularly active in commissioning works from composers, especially in the a cappella repertoire, and is committed to promoting these new works in concert and on record.

With these contemporary works, as with the early Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, Joël Suhubiette has recorded more than 35 albums for the Virgin Classics, Hortus, Calliope, Ligia Digital, Naïve, Mirare, and L'Empreinte Digitale labels.

With his two ensembles, he performs at major French venues and festivals and is invited to perform in many countries in Europe, North and South America, North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

Joël Suhubiette also performs oratorio and opera with numerous French orchestras and instrumental ensembles (Café Zimmermann, Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Ars Nova, Concerto Soave, Les Passions, Les Ombres, the Dijon and Massy opera orchestras, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, etc.).

Since 2006, he has been artistic director of the Musiques des Lumières festival in Sorèze in the Tarn region. Joël Suhubiette has been named Officer of Arts and Letters by the Ministry of Culture.
